Multilingualism with JoNaLu

Did you ever heard about the german television show "JoNaLu"?
JoNawhat? No? This could be interesting when you have bilingual
or trilingual children and toddlers, who are speaking/learning
German as well.

The word "JoNaLu" is made up with the three names of  the
protagonists:

  • Jo is the name of the "Mäuserich" - a mouse boy
  • Na(ya) is the mouse girl
  • Lu(dwig), the little ladybug*, completes the trio
*ladybug ("der Marienkäfer", "la coccinelle")

They are living together in a mouse hole ("das Mauseloch",
"le trou de souris") under Paul's Bed. Paul is a boy, who is
living with his mother in this house. Whenever the humans
leaving their house the animals are starting to explore the
world of house and garden. Together they experience
some adventures with Paul's toys.

The mice and the bug are encouraging children to sing and
to dance with them, while teaching values like friendship,
social cohesion and helpfulness.

The interesting part of the show is that they get help from
their friends, who are speaking in another language to them.
They cope together with all the problems without getting
stuck in language barriers.
Also when it's just a little foretaste, it could help to take
fear away from other languages and other cultures.

  • Minou ist a French speaking firefly ("das Glühwürmchen", "la luciole")
  • Scottie is an English speaking spider ("die Spinne", "l'araignée"
  • Caruso is an Italian speaking frog ("der Frosch", "la grenouille")
  • Carmen is a Spanish speaking dormouse ("der Siebenschläfer", "le loir")
  • Sibel is a Turkish speaking butterfly ("der Schmetterling", "le papillon")
  • Nikolaj is the Russian speaking mole ("der Maulwurf", "la taupe")
  • Penelope is an old wise turtle ("die Schildkröte", "la tortue")

The show and their website were awarded by the "Frankfurter
Buchmesse" and by "digita 2011 " for their achievements
to support language and pre-school education.

Radio Trilllingo is a huge fan of their adventures. Currently
there are only 13 episodes. Like many other families we are
hoping for a second season.

Here is the website to play JoNaLu games and an
episode on You Tube.

"...denn ein JoNaLu bist auch du!"
